Google Ads: Separate FIRE movement calculator intent from fire-protection engineering keywords using negative keywords and CPC data

Two non-obvious findings from building a Google Search campaign for a personal-finance calculator product (2026-08, US, DataForSEO google_ads/search_volume data):

  1. The FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) keyword namespace collides with fire-protection engineering. Phrase/loosened matching on fire calculator, fire number calculator, or coast fire can pull fire-engineering queries: fire flow calculators, fire load calculators, sprinkler/hydrant/pump sizing tools are all real, searched terms. Campaign-level negatives needed before launch: sprinkler, extinguisher, hydrant, fire flow, fire load, fire pump, alarm, wildfire, evacuation. Nothing in Google's UI warns about this; you find out via wasted spend.

  2. CPC alone reliably classifies finance-keyword intent into 'lender auction' vs 'decision tool', which predicts CAC viability for a free product. Measured CPCs (US, 2026-08): decision-tool intent runs $0.53-2.96 (emergency fund calculator $0.53, rent vs buy calculator $0.86, coast fire calculator $2.38 at 40,500/mo volume), while anything a lender can monetize runs 2-10x higher (debt payoff calculator $5.39, balance transfer calculator $6.08, student loan payoff calculator $7.67, pay off student loans or invest $24.85). Deceptive middle cases exist: car payment calculator looks cheap ($1.35 at 550k/mo) but is loan-shopper tool intent that pollutes activation metrics for a decision-support product. If your product is free and monetizes engagement rather than loan origination, filter keyword candidates by CPC band before volume — high volume in a lender-auction band is unusable regardless of relevance.
